This piece is the 1st of The Hidden Jewels series. I always knew that African women hid rice in their hair to help sustain them when the escaped from slavey plantations. However, I only recently learned that they also hid pieces of gold and other precious stones as currency and this information inspired this painting and the series. She has a thick head of hair, filled with intricately patterned curls and coils, made using hot glue. Snug within her crown of hair, are bits of gold and once again her hair symbolizes so much more than just beauty, but strength, sustenance and her determination to survive.
